Entropic elasticity

What causes an elastomer to go back to its initial position after being stretched? The driving force has noting to do with energy, but with configurational entropy.

2nd principle of thermodynamics

As Clausius stated, the heat goes from hot to cold. We start with hot (red) molecules at the right hand side and cold (blue) molecules at the left hand side. Watch them mixing. Can you see the heat flux?

Chemical reaction

We start from a gas of interacting molecules. As the simulation proceeds, neighboring molecules bond together.

Melting and crystallization:

A 2D crystalline system is heated up until it melts and eventually evaporates. Subsequent cooling brings the system back to its crystalline state... but not exactly the same!

On irreversibility:

A very low, but still non-zero probability!
